EVERGREEN FERNS FOR MOIST AREAS AND TOLERANT OF SOME SUN |
ADIANTUM HISPIDULUM ROSY MAIDENHAIR FERN C,VD,D,P. | Hardy. An attractive little fern, which slowly spreads to give pretty ground cover. The fronds start off pink, then, as the triangular leaves appear, turn to dark green. One of the best maidenhair ferns. |
BLECHNUM SPICANT* HARD FERN A,VD,D,P. | Hardy. An attractive little fern, which forms a compact mound of comb-like fronds, growing out from the crown in a rosette. The new fronds are a bright, shiny, pale green, which show up very well against the dark green of the older fronds. Must have neutral to acid soil. Will tolerate some sun. |
DOODIA MEDIA RASP FERN A,VD,D.P. | Hardy. Native of Australia and closely related to the Blechnums. Forms a neat clump of mid-green, comb-like fronds start off red before turning through pink to their final colour. |
POLYSTICHUM MUNITUM AMERICAN SWORD FERN A,VD,T. | Hardy. The long, mid-green fronds have finely divided leaves, are broad at the base and come to a fine sword-like point at the tips. Hence its name. As they mature, the fronds curl beautifully, creating a wonderfully arching fern. A great garden fern. |
POLYSTICHUM POLYBLETHARUM JAPANESE TASSEL FERN A,VD,M,P. | Hardy. My favourite fern, it forms a rosette of dark green, shiny fronds, which look good at any time in the year. In the spring, the fern is at its most spectacular, as the new fronds are a wonderful, bright, shiny, lime-green colour and covered in bristles, contrasting beautifully with the old foliage. Pot or garden, a 'must'. |
POLYSTICHUM PROLIFERUM MOTHERSHIELD FERN T.P. | Hardy. Native of Australia. A really beautiful fern with dark-green, open, lacy fronds growing a substantial rootstock which can form a small trunk. Will tolerate some sun if roots are kept moist. Well suited to any garden. |
SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA BROWNII BROWN'S SPIKEMOSS VD,D,P. | Hardy. Not strictly a fern, although a distant cousin. Forms a slow-growing mound of dense, moss-like, pale green foliage. An ideal plant for a small rockery. Best in a moist soil, but not too wet in winter. |
SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA AUREA GOLDEN SPIKEMOSS VD,D,P. | Hardy. Not strictly a fern, although a distant cousin. More like a big moss, it has beautiful golden-green, dense foliage which provides excellent ground cover. Its spreading nature also makes it suitable for hanging baskets. Best in a moist soil, but not too wet in winter. |
SELAGINELLA KRAUSSIANA GOLD TIPS GOLD TIPPED SPIKEMOSS VD,D,P. | Hardy. Not strictly a fern, although a distant cousin. More like a big moss, it has beautiful gold tipped, pale green, dense foliage which provides excellent ground cover. Its spreading nature also makes it suitable for hanging baskets. Best in a moist soil, but not too wet in winter. |
EVERGREEN FERNS FOR MOIST, SHADY AREAS |
BLECHNUM MINUS SOFT WATER FERN A,VD,D,P. | Hardy. Native of Australia and New Zealand. Arching, broad, mid-green fronds, which, when young, are a pinky-red colour. Will tolerate wet areas. |
BLECHNUM NUDUM FISHBONE WATER FERN A,VD,T,P. | Hardy. A small trunk-forming fern from Australia. Shuttlecocks of broad, mid-green fronds on a black trunk, which increases in height by 1cm. per year. Must have shade and will tolerate wet areas. |
DRYOPTERIS DILATATA CRISPA WHITESIDE* CRISTATE BROAD BUCKLER FERN A,VD,M,P. | Hardy. A beautiful, medium-sized fern, with neatly crisped, golden green, wavy fronds. A good, garden fern. |
DRYOPTERIS MARGINALIS MARGINAL SHIELD FERN M. | Hardy. A good, garden fern, with dark blue-green fronds growing from a tussock. Tough and easily grown. Can be grown as a marginal. |
POLYSTICHUM ACROSTICHOIDES CHRISTMAS FERN VD,T,P. | Hardy. The long fronds are deeply cut and leathery, giving a very distinctive appearance, which, combined with their dark green colour, make this fern very popular as cut foliage in winter. Hence its name. New fronds are covered in silvery hairs, which contrast so well with the older ones. |
POLYSTICHUM TSUS-SIMENSE KOREAN ROCK or DWARF HOLLY FERN A,VD,D,P. | Hardy. A neat, low-growing fern with matt-green fronds, covered in silvery-white scales and holly-like tips. The light appearance contrasts well with the cool, shady conditions that this fern needs. |
WOODWARDIA FIMBRIATA GIANT CHAIN FERN A,VD,T. | Hardy. A magnificent fern living up to its 'Giant' name by growing to 6ft.(2m.), or more. The large, arching fronds are a wonderful lush green colour and, being evergreen, look spectacular all-year round. Nothing better for the back of the fernery! |
