ADIANTUM PEDATUM MISS SHARPLES EASTERN MAIDENHAIR FERN A,VD,D,P. | Hardy. A dainty fern, with black, wiry stems and many delicate, yellowish-green fronds and lobed leaves. Slowly spreading. One of the most beautiful of all ferns. |
ATHYRIUM ANGUSTUM FORMA RUBELLA LADY-IN-RED FERN VD,M,P. | Hardy. The midrib of the frond is a vibrant burgundy colour, in sharp contrast to the green of the foliage. Best colour is achieved with a lack of nitrogen and at least one winter dormancy. |
ATHYRIUM GHOST GHOST FERN VD,M,P. | Hardy. Similar to the Japanese Painted Fern, but with almost grey foliage, giving it a ghostly appearance. Especially effective when placed among darker plants. |
ATHYRIUM NIPPONICUM PICTUM (syn.METALLICUM) JAPANESE PAINTED FERN VD,M,P. | Hardy. One of the few really variegated ferns, having metallic silvery-grey fronds with a wine-red midrib. A really beautiful fern which is a must for any garden. |
ATHYRIUM NIPPONICUM PICTUM APPLECOURT JAPANESE PAINTED FERN VD,M,P. | Hardy With all the attributes of the above, but with added heavy cresting of each frond to create a fuller, more delicate appearance. |
ATHYRIUM NIPPONICUM PICTUM SILVER FALLS JAPANESE PAINTED FERN VD,M,P. | Hardy. Similar to A. Pictum but having pure grey fronds. A very striking fern. |
ATHYRIUM NIPPONICUM PICTUM URSULA'S RED JAPANESE PAINTED FERN VD,M,P. | Hardy. Very similar to A. Pictum but, in addition to the midrib, the metallic grey fronds themselves are flushed with claret-red. A truly stunning fern. |
MATTEUCIA STRUTHIOPTERIS SHUTTLECOCK OR OSTRICH FEATHER FERN A,VD,T. | Hardy. One of our best known ferns, with beautiful, erect fronds, tapered at both ends, giving it the appearance of a shuttlecock. Its architectural form and yellow foliage make it a very popular fern for shaded areas although it will also tolerate full sun if the soil is wet enough. If it is happy, it will send up new crowns. However, this is not a problem as they can be easily cut off if desired. |
OSMUNDA CINNAMONEA CINNAMON FERN A,VD,M. | Hardy. Has very decorative young fronds covered with white, woolly hairs and emerging thin, delicate yellow-green foliage. The mature fronds are bluish-green, but, with age, turn to a cinnamon-brown. Fertile fronds have clusters of round capsules on the stem which turn from bright to dark green. A most unusual fern which can be grown as a marginal. |
OSMUNDA CLAYTONIA INTERRUPTED FERN A,VD,M. | Hardy. A large fern with woolly-looking young fronds covered in pink hairs, which unfurl to become large, very distinctive, green fronds. Eventually forms a small trunk. Just that different to be worth trying in a very damp spot. |
OSMUNDA REGALIS* ROYAL FERN A,VD,T. | Hardy. One of our largest native ferns. The young fronds are a coppery-brown colour before turning from pale to dark green as they mature. In autumn they are a bright yellow before going brown. A mature specimen will eventually form a trunk and become a real statement in a damp spot. Can be grown as a marginal. |
OSMUNDA REGALIS PURPURESCENS* ROYAL FERN A,VD,T. | Hardy. Exactly as above, but with the added bonus of having a purple stem. |
DRYOPTERIS DILATATA LEPIDOTA CRISTATA* LACY BROAD BUCKLER FERN A,VD,M,P. | Hardy. A very elegant, airy fern with narrow panicles of neatly crested fronds, dotted with small red-gold scales. |
DRYOPTERIS MARGINALIS MARGINAL SHIELD FERN M. | Hardy. A good, garden fern, with dark blue-green fronds growing from a tussock. Tough and easily grown. Can be grown as a marginal. |

ATHYRIUM FILIX-FEMINA VICTORIAE* CRUCIFORM FERN VD,T,P. | Hardy. A delicate fern to look at, despite it being strong-growing. The leaflets of the fronds are paired so as to form crosses and end in crests making them look as though they have tassles. A very distinctive fern. |
ATHYRIUM OTPHORUM, OKANUM RED STEMMED FERN A,VD,M,P. | Hardy. Stems and midribs are a deep wine-red in colour, contrasting well with the broad, pale green, almost glaucous leaves of the fronds. As they mature, the fronds become darker in colour. Can be almost evergreen and grows well under trees. |
GYMNOCARPUM DRYOPTERIS PLUMOSUM* OAK FERN A,VD,D. | Hardy. A dainty and very elegant fern, with overlapping leaves on the pale green fronds give it a lush appearance. Provided it is not allowed to dry out, it will make excellent ground cover, as it grows on a creeping rhizome. Ideal for the rock garden. |
ONOCLEA SENSIBILIS SENSITIVE FERN M. | Hardy. A good ground cover fern with, bold, triangular fronds which resemble American Oak leaves. When young, they are a pinky-bronze colour. Ideal for waterside planting where it will help bind banks together. |
